Forestation
Forestation plays a vital role in enhancing and maintaining biodiversity by creating and sustaining habitats, regulating ecosystems, and promoting species diversity. Forests are not just a collection of trees but are complex ecosystems that support life at all levels, from microorganisms in the soil to large mammals in the canopy. By fostering biodiversity, forestation helps create resilient ecosystems that can withstand environmental changes and continue to provide essential services for both nature and humans. Biodiversity is an essential component of terroir, contributing to the health and resilience of vineyards, the complexity of wines, and the sustainability of viticulture practices. In essence, biodiversity enriches terroir, creating a symbiotic relationship where both thrive together, leading to wines that are a true testament to their origins.
We have been developing a forest in the north slope of our vineyard with passion. We planted hundreds of Douglas Fir which is indigenous to Oregon followed by hardwood trees such as hard maple and red oak. Many native plants, insects and animals will make a home there. Hawks nest there every year. We have also built a path through the forest and into the vineyard.
A trail in the forest provides access to its beauty while helping to protect delicate ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and enhance human health and well-being. Forest trails create a harmonious relationship between people and nature, fostering a deeper appreciation of the natural world. Beavers make dams in our pond. The vineyard sits at the origin of Chicken Creek. We plan to build a teahouse near the pond in the future.
